The rise of self-publishing over the past few years has obviously been driven by the incredible ease with which people can now print, bind and distribute their own products. Even though the Internet seems to have become the way in which most people like to get their information out to their ‘fans’, many still see the benefit in printing out instruction manuals and information products as they are more ‘tangible’ and often seen as better quality.

The e-book is obviously an incredible product, but people still like to see, feel and touch and so if you are really looking to add value to some of your productions whether it be software products or even presentations, you can add a lot of impact by doing a professional job and creating a well bound set of documents.

One of the easiest ways to do this is to use a comb, wire or coil binder. These work by firstly putting holes down the side of your paper and then inserting a spine that will then bind all the paper together. There are added bonuses in that these types of binding enable the user to place the manual flat on the desk – ideal if working next to a computer.

Obviously each type of binding process is different and here is a quick run-down of where each one can help.

Comb Binding

  • Uses a plastic coil to secure pages
  • Suitable for up to 450 pages
  • Being plastic – not as secure as wire
  • Easy to open – for small documents you can easily add more pages, but it becomes more difficult the more pages you have
  • The most economic option

Coil Binding
  • Uses a plastic coated coil to secure the pages
  • Suitable for up to 140 pages
  • Ideally used for reports, dissertations etc.
  • Very fast. Especially the electronic ones

Wire binding
  • Up to 125 pages
  • Great for smaller documents
  • Secure binding – you can’t get the pages out easily
  • Multi-coloured wires available
  • Offers a 360 degree fold

So, if you’re one of the increasing number of budding publishers who want to create their own documents with a professional edge, check out the wide range of binding machines available.
